How to Change Art in a Shadow Box
Shadow boxes are display cases for art work, memorabilia and keepsakes. These framed boxes have a depth, making it possible to encase and protect three-dimensional objects. The artwork or displayed items are mounted and secured to a mat board which serves as a backing for the shadow box. Changing the art or memorabilia in the shadow box isn't difficult if you pay close attention to the placement of the frame backing or backer board.

1
Turn the shadow box frame over. Look at the method that has been used to secure the backing into the frame. You should find tiny nails, small metal 'points' or staples. A handmade project may have a mat board, cardboard or foam backing material with tape smoothed over the mat and back of the frame.

2
Remove the nails, points or staples from the frame by inserting the flat screwdriver or flat nose pliers end under or on the fasteners. Pull out each fastener slowly to prevent splitting of the frame materials.

3
Pull the front of the shadow box away from the backer board and enclosed artwork. Set the top aside.
-
4
Check to see exactly how the art is attached to the backer or mat board. It may be glued, sewn in place or attached with double-sided tape.
-
5
Gently remove the artwork from the material that is secured to the backing of the interior of the frame. You may need to used small, sharp scissors or tweezers to cut threads, remove glue or pull tape away from the material.
-
6
Examine the interior of the shadow box after the current artwork or keepsake has been removed. There may be velvet, satin or cotton coverings that was affixed to the foam core, wood or cardboard frame backing. Determine if the cloth or backing materials are damaged. Replace the materials if they are ripped or broken.

7
Attach the new artwork to the interior of the shadowbox with glue, double-sided tape, or hand-stitching to secure it in place. Set the backer board covering on to the back of the frame and secure with new nails, points or staples.
