How to Find a Recipe by Listing Ingredients

Most home cooks have encountered a time or two when they have ingredients in the pantry, but don't know what to do with them. After all, what do you do with a 10-lb. bag of rice after you've exhausted every rice dish you know? Should you ever find yourself in this situation, a reverse recipe search can come in handy. There are websites that allow you to search for recipes by listing ingredients. One such website is RecipeMatcher.com, which has a library of hundreds of recipes for you to search for.

  • Type www.recipematcher.com into your web browser, then click in the No. 1 box labeled "My Ingredients."

  • Begin to type in your first ingredient. A drop-down list will appear with ingredients that match your description. Select one of these from the list.

  • Type in your second ingredient and repeat the same action. Do this for your remaining ingredients. Try limiting this list to two to four ingredients.

  • The second box allows you to search for a recipe by cuisine. Check off the desired boxes if you want something specific such as Mexican food or a romantic meal. Otherwise, just leave "All Cuisines" checked.

  • Box No. 3 three lets you set your primary ingredient, which also is optional. When you're done, click "Search" at the bottom of the page.

  • The search results are listed according to relevance. The recipe with the most ingredients listed will be at the top of the page.
