How to Fix a Socket Wrench

A socket wrench is a ratcheting type wrench that is designed to use interchangeable sockets. The sockets are removable and fit many different sizes of fasteners. Over time the ratcheting part of the wrench tends to become corroded. A little preventative maintenance can avoid problems such as this. Taking the wrench apart and lubricating it is not a difficult process, just make sure you remember how to put it back together.

Things You'll Need

  • Dry cloth
  • Damp cloth
  • Lithium grease
  • Loosen the screw on the faceplate of the wrench. Remove both the screw and the faceplate.

  • Remove all of the parts. Inspect each part as you remove it to ensure that you have no broken parts. If any part seems to be broken or rusty, you will want to replace it.

  • Clean each part separately by wiping with a damp cloth.

  • Oil each part lightly with lithium grease. You can apply the oil by spraying the grease on a dry cloth and then wiping each part.

  • Reassemble the wrench.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you make note of how each part fits inside the wrench. Reassemble the wrench as soon as possible so you don't forget how everything fits.
