How to Get the Windows Vista Toolbar in Windows XP

If you like the look of Windows Vista, but are holding onto the sturdy framework of Windows XP, you're not alone. While Windows Vista and Seven are popular iterations of the PC operating system, many users have too large a base of XP content to make the migration immediately. But if you want to sample the cosmetic glitz of Windows Vista before upgrading, it's always possible to customize XP with a few of Vista's bells and whistles. One of these is adding a Vista-style toolbar to XP.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the VistaVG Ultimate theme. This is a free theme that provides the skin of Windows Vista over Windows XP. The theme can be downloaded from the "Resources" section, below.

    • 2

Download and install Styler. This free application allows greater customization of Windows XP than the operating system's built-in personalization tools. Styler can also be downloaded from the "Resources" section. After installing, restart Windows XP.

    • 3

Enable the Styler Toolbar. In Windows Explorer, right-click on a blank section of the toolbar. Click "Styler Toolbar" to enable this option, and disable all other options by clicking to remove the tick marks next to them.

    • 4

Install the Styler skin folder. Navigate to the directory where you downloaded Styler to. Copy the "skins" folder to the directory "C:\Program Files\Styler\TB\skins\Styler's." (If Windows XP is installed on a partition or separate drive, install to wherever your "Program Files" directory is kept.)

    • 5

Apply the VistaVG toolbar skin. Click the small "floppy disk" icon in the top right-hand corner and hover your mouse over the "Skin" section. This will bring up a choice of toolbar skin to apply: Select "Styler's" and choose "VistaVG."

    • 6

Remove the Menu bar. To complete the Vista look, double-click the small S-shaped Styler icon in the Windows XP System Tray. Go to the "Toolbar" tab and check the boxes marked "Hide Menu Bar." Close the box to finalize the changes.
