How to Use Bleach With a Rubber Sink Mat

Is your kitchen starting to smell musty? It could be the rubber mat. Rubber mats are used in many kitchens and sinks to aid in the dishwashing process. As they sit in a moist, warm surface, they can often grow mold or mildew, which can cause unpleasant smells. The mold and mildew can be removed with some bleach. Regular washing with bleach will keep your kitchen from stinking and keep your rubber mat working properly.

Things You'll Need

• Bleach
• Bucket
• Rubber gloves
• Plastic brush or old toothbrush

Instructions

1. Fill your sink with one part bleach and one part water a few inches deep. If you do not want bleach in your sink, fill a bucket with one part bleach and one part water.

2. Put on the rubber gloves to avoid contact with the bleach, with can be harsh on skin.

3. Lay your rubber mat in the sink filled with bleach water. Otherwise place the mat in the bucket filled with bleach water.

4. Leave your mat soaking in the bleach for one hour. Scrub any visible mold or mildew spots with the brush.

5. Empty your sink or bucket of the bleach water. Rinse the mat with warm water.

6. Hang the mat over the edge of the sink and let dry thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings

• Wash the rags alone or with other white items as the bleach could cause discoloring.

• Do not mix the bleach with other cleaners as this can cause toxic fumes.

• Keep the bleach out of reach of small children and pets.
