How to Make a Bird Cage Seed Cover
Indoor birds are one of the most popular house pets. They brighten our lives with their songs and cheerful chirps, but can be messy when they toss seed chaff, droppings, dander, feathers and nesting materials outside their cage to accumulate on the floor. Commercial cage seed covers can be expensive, and the right size and height can be hard to find. These covers are easy and inexpensive to make with a little sewing knowledge and some basic materials.
Things You'll Need
- Any fine mesh material
- Double-folded bias binding tape
- Sewing thread
- Tape measure
- Quarter-inch of elastic
- Safety pin

Measuring
-
1
Measure the circumference and height of your bird cage. Add 1 to 2 inches for ease and to allow for seaming. Cover the feeding, drinking and roosting areas as much as possible.
-
2
Purchase the mesh material needed.
-
-
3
Cut the mesh to the measurements taken. When working with fine mesh, lay the material on a dark surface, such as a dining room table, to make cutting a straight edge easier.
Sewing
-
4
Sew a half-inch seam to join the two ends of the material.
-
5
Fold the double fold bias tape around the raw edges of the top and bottom of your mesh and sew to make a channel into which to insert the elastic.
-
6
Cut two pieces of elastic the circumference of your cage, minus two inches. Insert a safety pin into the end of the elastic and use this to feed the elastic through the channel created by the folded bias tape. When the elastic is through the channel, lay the two ends of the elastic over one another and sew them together. Repeat for the top edge.

Tips & Warnings
Once the cover is fitted on the cage, always monitor your birds to assure that they will not get their nails tangled in the material as they climb on the sides of the cage until they are acquainted with their new cover.
