How to Create Trees With Oil Pastels
Most people have drawn a tree once or twice, and for anyone learning to draw with oil pastels, this is a useful exercise. Oil pastels are similar to crayons, but they are softer and more easily blended and smeared.

1
Choose a medium green. Draw an irregular shape to represent the bulk of the leaves. For a child-like tree, this shape should be puffy like a cloud. For a more realistic tree, this shape should be somewhat circular or oval in nature, but with an outline that follows no specific pattern.
-
2
Color in the irregular shape you drew in step one. The darker you color, the bolder your picture will be. You might wish to start coloring in lightly and darken slowly.

3
Choose a darker green. Color over the lighter green shape you drew in Step 1. Allow some of the medium-green to show through, then blend together the two colors with a fingertip or a blending stump.

4
Choose a medium brown. Starting at the bottom center of the irregular shape you drew for the leaves, draw a long trunk that spreads outward at the top and the bottom. For a more child-like trunk, draw a long rectangle. The top of the trunk should be divided into a V shape, to represent two branches spreading out into the tree leaves.

Color in the trunk with the medium brown, then color over that with a darker brown. Blend the two colors together with your fingertips or blending stump.
