Research different looks before you spend money on paint. Visit a bookstore and browse through the home design books and magazines. Or check out some photos online. Find a look that you love. Make sure that the style and color will work with your room, design style and current wall color.

Choose which wall you will paint. Usually, the best option is to paint the focal wall of the room. To determine which wall is your focal point, look at the setup of the furniture. If you are dealing with a typical square or rectangular room with four walls, this is usually one of the two longer walls and may be behind a bed or couch.

Grab a bunch of paint chips from the hardware store and look at them in the room you are going to paint. Hold them up to furniture, fabrics and other walls in the room. When you have found the perfect color, buy that exact shade. A great tip is to go with a higher-quality brand of paint. It may mean shelling out a little more money, but it will be worth it when you don't have to paint three or four coats.

Buy a high-quality roll of painter's tape. Since the surrounding walls will be a different color, you want a nice crisp line dividing them. Ask someone who works at the store what brand he recommends. Apply the tape carefully, pressing it down with your fingers to make a firm seal.

Apply a coat of primer. Latex or oil-based are fine, but latex is much easier to clean up and has less fumes. Others swear by the durability of oil-based. After the primer is totally dry, apply a coat of paint. Let it dry and then determine whether you will need a second coat. If in doubt, always go for that extra coat. When the paint is totally dry, carefully remove the tape for the big reveal.
