Turn over the piece of vintage cookware to find a manufacturer's mark if you're unsure about the piece's uses. Contact the company for exact usage instructions if you find a manufacturer's mark.

Determine the material the piece is made from if there is no manufacturer's information. Metal vessels are usually safe for conventional ovens. Glass items may or may not be oven-safe, so it's best to err on the side of caution. Plastic items should not be used in ovens or with hot foods.

Refrain from putting your items in the microwave unless you feel confident that they're sturdy enough to withstand the heat. Most vintage cookware predates microwaves and can be fragile.

Employ vintage cookware made of cast iron, enamelware or stainless steel for stovetop use. You can transfer pots and pans with metal handles from the stove to the oven, but never transfer pots with non-metal handles.

Wash all of your vintage cookware by hand and dry with a soft towel. Do not place cookware in the dishwasher because the water pressure and heat can destroy delicate finishes and designs. Never use abrasives or bleach.
