How to Slice in Photoshop 8

Although Adobe Photoshop 8 (also known as Photoshop CS) is a bit dated, it's still a powerful graphics program with a number of tools and features you can use in a wide variety of projects--from creating ads to web page design. One tool that is often used for both these purposes is the "Slice" tool. This tool is used to divide images or documents into separate parts that can be exported as individual graphics files. This tool works the same in later versions of Photoshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. Select "File" from the menu and select "Open." In the dialog that opens, browse to some document that you would like to slice up. It doesn't have to be all on one layer, since the slice tool works based on the overall appearance of the document.

Decide how you want to divide the document. If it's for an ad you might want to create separate slices of people or objects shown. On the other hand, if it's meant for a web page you should slice based on function--creating slices around banners, navigation buttons, and so on.

Select the "Slice" tool from the toolbar. Begin making your slices. As you make the slice, each will be assigned a number; right-click on each slice and edit its properties to give it a name. If you make a mistake when slicing, just hit "Edit and then "Undo."

Select "File" from the menu and click "Save for Web. Choose JPEG as the file type and click "Save." Name the file, choose the location you want to save to and click "OK." Photoshop will save out a folder with your sliced images, which can then be opened and used in any other project. Photoshop also saves an HTML web page to the folder if you want to use the sliced document as a web page.
