How to Replace a Gibson Pickup Switch

Most Gibson guitars feature a three-way pickup switch that is used to select the neck pickup, bridge pickup or both. The pickup switch can become damaged or broken with constant use. A faulty pickup switch will typically prevent the signal from the pickups reaching the amp. It is a fairly simple, inexpensive part to replace. A replacement pickup switch can be replaced with minimal time and effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the back plate directly behind the pickup switch. On Gibson guitars there is typically a small plate specifically for the pickup switch. The larger back plate is the pickup access. You only need to remove the small back plate. You will need to remove the screws with a screwdriver.

    • 2

Make a diagram of which wire is attached to each tab on the pickup switch. It is important that each wire is connected to the same tab of the new pickup switch.

    • 3

Remove the solder connecting each wire to the old pickup switch. This simply requires touching the end of the soldering iron to the blob of solder holding the wire to the tab on the switch. The solder should melt almost instantaneously, freeing the end of the wire.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the pickup switch in place. The pickup switch can easily be removed from the guitar body once the screws are removed.

    • 5

Replace the old pickup switch with the replacement. Replace the screws to secure the new switch in place.

    • 6

Add a small drop of solder to the tip of the soldering iron. This is done by touching the tip of the iron to the coil of electrical solder.

    • 7

Reconnect each wire to the matching tab of the new pickup switch, using a drop of solder on each.

    • 8

Replace the plate on the back of the guitar. Reattach all of the screws to secure it in place. The pickup switch on the Gibson guitar has now been fully replaced. The new switch will function identically to the old one.

Tips & Warnings

  • Soldering irons get extremely hot when used. It also takes a significant amount of time for the tip to cool after the power is shut off. Be careful not to burn yourself on the tip of the soldering iron.
