How to Restore Sheet Vinyl
Invented in 1920, vinyl is a material found in homes, schools and offices. Many homes have sheet vinyl because of its cheap price, attractive design options and ease of installation, cleaning and upkeep. Sheet vinyl is not indestructible, though. A gouge with a chair or heel can damage sheet vinyl easily. Time can even make good sheet vinyl look worn. It is easy to restore sheet vinyl with a little time and good technique. - Manufacturer recommended floor polish
- Manufacturer recommended floor wax
- Vinyl adhesive
- Utility knife
- Masking tape
- Scrap piece of flooring

Restore Shine

Sweep the floor. Use a dust mop or regular broom to remove dirt.

Mop with water. Use a bucket of water or a sink of water to mop the floor clean. Often products with ammonia or even vinegar can slowly remove the layer of shine on sheet vinyl. Simply mop with water and let dry. Dry any areas where water is pooling.

Apply a wax stripper using a mop. Rinse-mop the floor with fresh water to remove the wax build-up. Allow the floor to air dry floor and use a towel to dry excess liquid.

Apply a floor polish. Applying a manufacturer recommended floor polish will restore shine to your sheet vinyl.

Apply a floor wax. Use two coats to keep a good protective layer of shine on the sheet vinyl floor.
Repairing Cuts

Sweep the floor. Remove extra dirt from the floor before restoring. Damp-mop the floor with water to get extra dirt off the floor before repairing the cut, rip or gouge in the vinyl.

Cut a patch square from a spare piece of vinyl. If you do not have a scrap piece of vinyl, go to a hardware store and get a match. Cut a patch big enough to cover the mar in the vinyl. If the floor has a pattern, cut to match lines in the pattern.

Lay the patch over the portion of sheet vinyl that needs repair. Line up the pattern in the patch with the pattern in the floor. Use masking tape to secure the patch over the original floor.

Cut around the edge of the patch. Make the cut all the way through the original sheet vinyl. Remove the patch and pull up the damaged portion of the floor. You may need to scrape the damaged piece up with a putty knife.

Spread a thin layer of manufacturer recommended vinyl adhesive to the subfloor.

Place the patch into the space where the old piece has been removed. Place a heavy book on the patch and let it sit overnight.

Remove the book and spread liquid seam sealer around the edges of the patch. Allow the seam sealer to dry.
