How to Mount a Bench Grinder to a Stud
Mounting a bench grinder to a stud is often easier than using a grinder. There are two major tricks to it. First, you need to mount the grinder in a way that can support the weight of the grinder and deal with the pressure you put on it while grinding. Second, the grinder needs to be mounted in a space that gives you sufficient room to use it. Keep these things in mind while mounting your bench grinder.
Things You'll Need
- Bench grinder
- Large screws or bolts
- Drill
- Drill bit
- Screw bit
- Drill bit capable of drilling through metal
- Level or laser level
- Pencil
- Wrench or socket wrench
Instructions
-
Select and Prepare the Stud
-
1
Choose a stud with clearance sufficient to use it. If you're grinding small objects, you'll need a little space. If you're grinding long or oddly shaped objects, keep that in mind.
-
2
Make certain there is enough space to comfortably walk past the grinder with at least 2 feet of room.
-
-
3
Decide how high you want to mount the grinder. You might base this on the height of your workbench or on what level you feel comfortable holding materials.
-
4
Draw level lines on the stud outlining the future position of your grinder.
Set Up Connectors
-
5
Use bolts if you can access the reverse side of the stud. If you can't, use screws.
-
6
Use a minimum of four screws or bolts to mount the bench grinder. Screws and bolts are rated by pounds. Use a total poundage equal to double the weight of your grinder. If your grinder weighs 40 pounds, you could use four 20-pound bolts.
-
7
Hold the grinder up where you plan to mount it. Poke a pencil through the screw holes to mark where the screws or bolts will pass through.
-
8
Drill holes in the stud where you've marked. For screws use a drill bit 1/8 inch narrower than the screw diameter. For bolts, use a drill bit the same diameter as the bit.
-
9
Widen the holes in your grinder if necessary. Because the predrilled mounting holes are often for horizontal mounting, they may not be wide enough for the screws you need to mount on a wall. Use a drill bit the same diameter as your screws or bolts for this task.

10
Have an assistant hold the grinder in place as you insert the connectors.
-
11
Slide in connectors in the following order: top right corner, bottom left corner, top left corner, bottom right corner and others. For screws, drive them in 3/4 of the way. Slide the bolts all the way in, and then tighten the nuts as far as possible by hand.
-
12
Tighten your connectors the rest of the way, tightening half the remaining distance. Rotate through the connectors to ensure an even mount. Use your drill for screws and a wrench for bolts.
