Swamp coolers are an inexpensive alternative to the traditional air conditioner. They use a system of moistened pads and a pump which pulls in air and adds humidity, reducing the air temperature by 20 degrees and circulating the cooled air. Because of the increased moisture, mold and mildew can accumulate, or water within the swamp cooler may become stagnant. These issues produce an unpleasant odor that exudes from the device. You can effectively reduce these odors and make a swamp cooler smell good by implementing some simple cleaning methods and deodorizing agents.
Things You'll Need
- Tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract
Turn on the swamp cooler and let it run for 1 hour.
Turn the unit off and disconnect the power, then drain out all the water.
Clean out the cooler tray with a clean sponge dampened with a solution of 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar. This will help to loosen mineral buildup and reduce foul odors.
Replace the discarded moisture from the cooler with fresh water.
Pour two or three drops of tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract into the water in the swamp cooler. These substances will help neutralize offending odors and prohibit the formation of mold and mildew that can form within the unit. Tea tree oil is very effective but produces a strong aroma that may offend some. Use the grapefruit seed extract in place of tea tree oil for an aroma-free deodorizer for your swamp cooler.
