How to Write a Resume for a Supervisor Position

A resume for a supervisor’s position needs to show off your leadership skills. Beginning with your objective statement, you want the employer to know that you can take charge in this type of role, and where you intend to take this position to. A focused resume will give the potential employer a great first impression.

  • Update your personal information at the top of your resume. Provide your name, address, phone number and email address to give the potential employer a couple of different ways to contact you. While email address is optional, make sure it is on your resume if you are applying over the Internet.

  • Include the job title of the supervisor position to which you are applying within the first four words of your objective statement. Companies often receive hundreds of resumes for one position and will use resume scanners to screen applicants and narrow them down.

  • Use leadership keywords from the supervisor's job description on your resume. This will help you through the screening process, and will alert the employer to what you are capable of doing for the company.

  • List any previous experience that is relevant to a supervisor’s position or to this particular job. For example, if you are applying to a retail supervisor position, you may not want to list a maintenance position you held, unless you supervised others below you. You do not need to include any positions that you held more than 10 years ago, unless they show off your supervisor skills significantly.

  • Leave out references on your resume, but have the information handy. Type up three to five references and their contact information on a separate sheet. Bring the sheet with you on the day of the interview in case you are asked for references.
