How to Load Music Into an iPod From a CD

Increasingly, music enthusiasts fill their iPods with music from digital downloads. But if you are someone who has accumulated a 20-year-old music collection on compact discs, you can still get all of those songs onto your iPod in a few easy steps. But be aware: transferring music into an iPod from a CD won't be a quick task. In an hour, expect to load about a dozen CDs onto your iPod via your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to see whether your computer has iTunes. If not, download a free Windows- or Macintosh-compatible copy of the music-storage program from Apple.com.

    • 2

Open iTunes once it has been downloaded to your computer. Insert a music-filled CD into your computer and wait for iTunes to recognize the CD. Select "import" when you are prompted by iTunes to begin downloading the CD into your computer.

    • 3

Connect your iPod to your computer with the iPod-compatible USB cable. Check to see that iTunes recognizes your iPod on the left side of the iTunes screen under the heading "Devices." Follow the prompts in iTunes to begin syncing the CD music into your iPod. Monitor the syncing in the rectangular window at the top of the iTunes screen.

    • 4

Hit the gray, circular "Eject" button next to the image of your iPod on the left side of the iTunes screen when downloading is completed. Disconnect your iPod from the cable, and unplug the cable from the computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the CD in your computer disc drive is one you made yourself, go to "File" in iTunes, select "Add to Library," choose the CD and hit "Open" to begin downloading the CD's contents to iTunes.
