How to Make a Wireless USB Antenna

Computers and the Internet have become an essential part of everyday life now. Some people depend on these things for their jobs, while others just like to surf the Internet as a hobby. In either case, the faster your connection, the better your experience. One of the faster ways to connect to the Internet is through a wireless connection (Wi-Fi). Sometimes, though, a good connection is just out of reach. Building an antenna can help strengthen an existing signal so you can more easily pick it up for use.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your USB wireless adapter into your computer's USB port. Follow the instructions that came with the device to set it up.

    • 2

Punch a hole through your concave metallic object (a bowl, strainer or can will work), just large enough for the USB adapter to fit through.

    • 3

Slide the adapter through the hole with the male USB end of the device pointing out. Secure it in place with adhesive tape.

    • 4

Plug one end of the USB extension cable into your computer. Plug the other end into the USB adapter that is now fixed in the metal antenna.

    • 5

Place the antenna near an outer wall and point it outside. If there is a specific location that you'd like to connect to, point it in that direction.

    • 6

Use your computer's wireless network searching program to look for available networks and connect to the one with the strongest signal.
