How to Update Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Digital Display Drivers

Intel’s Graphics Media Accelerator is the name of the graphics chip that is included in most of Intel’s modern motherboards. As software engineers at Intel develop more efficient ways of handling data, they implement these methods through driver updates. In other words, a driver update can greatly improve the performance of the graphics card in your computer.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet connection
  • Computer owner’s manual
  • Navigate to the Intel Drivers Center website (see Resources).

  • Select “Graphics” from the list of driver types under the “Product Family” heading.

  • Select “Desktop graphics controllers” if your computer is a desktop or “Laptop graphics controllers” if your computer is a laptop.

  • Choose the name of the specific graphics card that is installed on your computer from the “product name” list (e.g., Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 [Intel GMA 3150]). You can find this information in the owner’s manual that came with your computer.

  • Select the operating system that is running on your computer.

  • Click the title of the latest driver that has been released.

  • Read through the release notes and accept the terms of use.

  • Click the “Download” button.

  • Open the installation file once the download is complete.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the update to your graphics driver. Note that your computer screen may flicker during this time.

  • Restart your computer when prompted to do so. This will finalize the installation of the driver.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not in possession of your owner’s manual, you can find the exact name of your graphics card in the Windows Device Manager. To open the device manager in Windows XP and prior operating systems, open the Start menu, right-click the “My Computer” icon, choose “Properties”, click the “Hardware” tab and select the “Device Manager” button.
  • To open the Device Manager in Windows Vista and later operating systems, click the Start menu and type “Dev” into the search box. Select the Device Manager application. The graphics card will be under the “Sound, video and game controllers” heading; look for “Intel Graphics Media Accelerator” followed by a model number.
