How to Apply Fabric to Furniture
There may be a piece of furniture in your home that is looking a little too plain for your tastes. Or perhaps you picked up a great furniture find at a flea market or thrift shop that has some minor flaws or could use a little sprucing up. Using fabric to transform furniture is inexpensive and easy. You can customize the piece of furniture with fabric that accents the rest of the décor in the room.

1
Determine the parts of the furniture you want to apply the fabric to. You can apply fabric to the front of each drawer or the top or sides of the furniture to draw attention to those areas.
-
2
Use a measuring tape to measure the length and width of the parts you want to decorate with fabric.

-
3
Cut the fabric to match the measurements you took. If the area of the furniture that you want to cover with fabric is an odd-shaped part, create a template from newspaper and trace that part of the furniture. Cut the tracing from the paper and trace the shape on your fabric with a chalk pencil. Cut this shape from the fabric.

4
Apply a thin layer of Modpodge (an acid-free brand of glue) over the part of the furniture that will be covered with fabric.
-
5
Apply the fabric to the furniture checking that the edges of the fabric line up with the edges of the furniture. Smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles in the fabric with your fingers.
-
6
Apply another thin layer of Modpodge over the fabric you just applied to the furniture. Brush it on smooth so there aren't any obvious lines. Allow the second layer of Modpodge to dry completely, and then apply another layer of Modpodge.
-
7
Repeat this decoupage process until the parts of the furniture are covered with the fabric. Allow the furniture to dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours before you use it.
