How to Treat a Broken Cat Nail
Cats are susceptible to injuries, including torn or broken nails. A cat can tear a nail by pulling his claws too hard after getting them wedged into something. Signs that a cat has torn a nail include blood around the nail, limping and avoiding putting weight on the paw. While a torn nail is not life-threatening, that tear or break in a cat's nails can become infected, causing pain and irritation.

1
Gently dislodge the nail if it's loose. Depending on the severity of the tear, you might be able to pull it off easily. If the nail does not cooperate, use a pet nail trimmer to take the nail off at the break.

2
Stop the bleeding that results from a torn nail by applying a small amount of cornstarch or flour over the affected area.

Clean and disinfect the wounded area with antibacterial soap. Pour warm water over the injured area for two minutes, and then use a paper towel to dry it. Put iodine over the area and allow it to air dry.

Take your cat to a vet if the tear is severe or you do not feel comfortable removing the torn nail. The vet will remove the break and use a temporary bandage to eliminate any bleeding. If needed, the vet will treat the injured area with antibiotics.
