How to Position Embroidery Hoops
An embroidery hoop is an essential and inexpensive tool for many types of needlework. The wooden or plastic hoop secures your project material and keeps it taut for even hand or machine stitching. Position the two pieces of the embroidery hoop over the specific area that you are working on when embroidering a project, especially a large one. The hoop can be loosened after each session of work, repositioned and tightened.

1
Loosen the metal screw that tightens the outer ring of a wooden or plastic embroidery hoop by twirling it with your fingers. Pull the two rings apart.
-
2
Place the interior and slightly smaller ring of the embroidery hoop under the cloth that you are using for your needlework project. Position the ring or hoop to sit under the area where you will be stitching a selected portion of the project.

Lower the outer or larger ring down over the material and the covered ring. The cloth should be taut under the top embroidery hoop. Lift the hoop off if the cloth is loose and sagging at the center of the hoop, and reposition it. You can also gently pull the sides of the cloth and tighten it within the hoop. Thump the cloth by flicking your index finger against it, and if you hear a dull thud, re-tighten the cloth within the hoop.

4

5

Tips & Warnings
Keep the needlework design centered within the hoop, enabling you to have good access to the stitching area.
Silk and some types of wool cloth should not be tightened as they will warp.
