If you are thinking of starting up a non-profit organization, or are involved with raising funds for one currently in operation, obtaining grants is an important component of your organization's development. Though the process can be time-consuming, the results will be worth it when you receive your funding.

Research the grant-making organizations you will solicit. This step is perhaps the most crucial because you don't want to waste your time soliciting grants from organizations that will not likely fund your efforts. Check the organization's website for past grants, and make comparisons to your organization and organizations the group has funded previously.

Examine the deadlines for letters of inquiry. Make sure that any funding requests you want to send in fall within the deadlines.

Write and submit a letter of inquiry, or LOI. If the funding organization offers guidelines for letters of inquiry, be sure to follow them. If no guidelines are given, most organizations want to know your funding request, including dollar amount, information about your organization, the problem you intend to solve, the target population and the intended result, usually in one to two pages.

Submit a grant proposal when requested by the funding organization. Most grant-making organizations offer detailed guidelines for how they wish to receive proposals, down the the font they wish you to use. If no guidelines are offered, include a brief summary, statement of need, project description, budget, information about your organization and conclusion.

Update the donor organization on the progress of its grant to your organization. Let the organization know how you used the money, and whether or not you were successful in your effort.
