Instructions

Find the monitor connections on the back of your computer. The analog connection will be small and nearly square, and it will often be colored blue. The digital monitor connection will be larger, rectangular and often white in color.

Check your monitor to see what kind of connection it has. Newer monitors will have both analog and digital connections, and you can connect both of those cables to your computer. If your computer does not have a digital connection you can remove that cable from the monitor and use only the analog connection.

Connect the monitor cables to the connections on the back of your computer. Make sure the connections are tight--if those connectors are not tightened you could experience problems with your picture. The analog and digital cables will come with thumbscrews, so make sure you tighten them until they will not turn any further. You can also use a screwdriver to further secure the cables.

Turn on your computer and watch for the video to come up on your new monitor. If you do not see any video be sure to recheck the connections to make sure they are tight. If the cables have been tightened with the thumbscrews you may need to use a screwdriver to make them more secure. When you wiggle the cable you should not be able to feel it moving around.

Log on to your computer. Your monitor may click off for a few seconds while the operating system adjusts the display resolution. If you want to change your screen resolution, right-click on the desktop and choose "Properties" from the menu. Click on the "Settings" tab and look for the "Screen Resolution" setting. Move the slider left or right and then choose "Apply."

If you are working with a Mac, click on "Monitor Control Panel" from the Apple menu. Then click the resolution you want from the screen resolution part of the monitor control panel. You will see your screen change to the new resolution.
