How To Size a Prong Collar
A prong (or pinch) collar is a collar which is fit around a dog's neck during training. This collar is made up of interlocking links of chain which gently pinches a dog's skin when the leash is pulled taut. The idea is that a dog will associate this pain with a behavior you don't want them to do and they will stop doing that behavior. The only way this works, however, is if the collar is fitted correctly on the dog's neck

1
Lay the prong collar out so that it is one long piece of chain. Pick up both ends and wrap the chain around your dog's neck, just under the chin.
-
2
Pull the chain taut, but not so it is choking the dog. One end of the chain should meet the rest of the chain so there is some overhang on the collar. Note how many links overhang as you will be removing them. Remove the chain from the dog's neck.

3
Press together the link which starts the overhanging part of the collar. As your press it together, pull the interlocking piece out from where you are pushing together. This will effectively shorten the chain so it will snugly fit around your dog's neck without an overlap.
-
4
Take the collar back to the dog and wrap it around his neck again. The ends of the chain should now fit to form a snug fit around the dog's neck, right under the chin.

5
Twist the collar so that the rings are on the side of the dog's head that will be next to you when you are walking.

Tips & Warnings
Don't be afraid of keeping the collar up high on the dog's neck, directly under the chin. Many people let the prong collar hang down the neck, near the shoulders. This collar won't be effective if it is in this location.
Keep the rings next to the dog's head. This will provide the pinching you want to train the dog. If the rings are under the head, it can hurt the dog worse than the side location and you will not get the results you are looking for.
