How to Clean a Turtle Dock

A turtle dock is an elevated ledge that can be placed in an aquarium, allowing the turtle to climb out of the water and rest on the dock. Some docks are floating docks, that simply stay on top of the water with no ramp leading to the top. As with any other piece of tank equipment, the turtle dock will need to be cleaned from time to time, to remove any bacteria that has developed, along with the common mold development that is typical in tanks that contain water. Instructions

    • 1

Fill the sink with a gallon of hot water, along with a squirt of liquid dish detergent. The detergent will be safe for the turtle and tank, while being strong enough to cut through film and residue.

    • 2

Remove the turtle dock from the tank, and submerge in the water for five minutes. This will loosen the residue.

    • 3

Scrub the turtle dock with a cleaning brush, remembering to wash the underside of the dock, along with sides and crevices of the unit.

    • 4

Empty the sink, then fill with another gallon of water, along with a cup of household vinegar. Let soak for 20 minutes. The vinegar will disinfect and deodorize the turtle dock.

    • 5

Scrub the dock once more with a cleaning brush, then rinse the dock with hot water.

    • 6

Place the dock back into the tank.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the turtle dock at least once per month to keep the unit clean.

  • Do not use bleach or any other harsh chemicals that can cause damage to the turtle.
