How to Convert 150 Grams of Chocolate to Cups

Chocolate comes in many forms and flavors--you can find solid bricks or various types of small pieces. Pieces are usually easier to measure than chunk chocolate. When following a recipe, it is important to know just how much of each ingredient to use. The metric system of measurement is not typically used in the United States, so some recipes may need to be converted from the metric system. Converting requires simply checking a cookbook or chart. Does this Spark an idea?

Decide what type of chocolate you will be using. Pieces are usually sold in 12-oz. bags, and solid chunks or bark package size varies. It is possible to use crushed, raw cocoa beans (cocoa nibs), or cocoa powder.

Convert grams to cups using a chart and/or math. Charts can be found in many cookbooks, in stores and on the internet; or you can use math to make your own conversions. One 24-oz. package of chocolate bark is divided into 12 pieces; 2 oz. per piece and 4 pieces per cup. The whole package is 680 grams. When you divide 680 by 12, you get 56 2/3 g per piece or 28 1/3 g per 1 oz. One cup is 8 oz. or 226 2/3 g. You will find the same is true of a bag of pieces; 1 oz. is 28 1/3 g and 1 cup is 226 2/3 g.

Use a scale to convert nibs or powder. Scales will give both measures. Cocoa nibs are purchased by weight and easier to measure with a scale. Powders would also be easier to convert by scale, but scales can be used for any type of chocolate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Conversion charts often round the numbers, so they are not as precise as a scale.
