There are, by my count, at least seven levels of fried chicken. The worst of them is good; the best, which I waited forty-four years to find, led to what can only be called an out-of-body experience. Let’s start at …
How to Make Pigs in a Blanket With Dough
Pigs in a blanket have become a popular appetizer at parties. The recipe originates from Germany, and now has many different varieties. A pig in a blanket consists of a hot dog or sausage wrapped and baked in dough. Homemade dough makes the appetizers more delectable, but many people use dough that ranges from pancake mix to crescent rolls. If you want a simple recipe for your next party or snack, then try making your own homemade pigs in a blanket. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Things You'll Need
- Cookie sheet
- Nonstick spray
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp. salt
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- ½ tsp. baking soda
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 4 tbsp. unsalted butter cut into pieces
- ½ cup grated cheddar cheese
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- Wooden spoon
- Rolling pin
- Pizza cutter

Instructions

-
1
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a cookie sheet with nonstick spray.
-
2
Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl. Add the baking soda, baking powder and sugar. Place the butter pieces into the dry ingredients. Stir until the mixture becomes crumbly.
-
-
3
Add the cheese to the mixing bowl. Mix until the cheddar cheese distributes evenly.
-
4
Create a well in the dry ingredients. Pour in the buttermilk. Use a wooden spoon to stir, and then allow the dough to set for 3 minutes.
-
5
Sprinkle flour over a flat surface, such as a counter top. Dust the top of the dough with flour, and place the dough out on the flat surface.
-
6
Use a rolling pin to flatten the homemade dough to 15 inches across by 7 inches high. Make sure the dough is shaped into a rectangle.
-
7
Cut the rectangle into thirds with a pizza cutter. Slice the dough horizontally, and then slice the horizontal strips into thirds vertically. You will have nine rectangles, which you will cut diagonally so that each rectangle makes two triangles.
-
8
Place each hot dog into a triangle. Roll the triangle around the hot dogs. Place each pig in a blanket on the greased cookie sheet.
-
9
Bake the pigs in a blanket for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow them to cool for 5 minutes and then serve.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of placing grated cheese into the dough, wait until you roll the hot dogs into the crescent triangles and add 1/2 slice of American cheese to each pig in a blanket.
Try not cutting the squares into triangles, and use regular hot dogs.
Use pre-packaged crescent rolls if you do not have time to make the dough.
