How to Create Download Links for PDF Files

PDF files are those documents seen on the web used to distribute read-only contracts, manuals and other important text. Using the Adobe Acrobat software, the user creates these PDF files to distribute online. One option when creating the PDF file is hotlinks, which are URLs to external websites on the Internet. These hotlinks are placed on words within the document. They automatically open a user's browser and send them to the URL indicated.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Adobe Acrobat and load the file you want to edit. Click the "Tools" menu and then select "Advanced Editing." Click the "Link Tool" option. This action changes the cursor to a crosshair.

    • 2

Use the mouse to highlight the text that will be used as a link. A dialog box appears where you enter the URL for the link.

    • 3

Select "Open A Web Page" in the dialog window's list of link options. Click the "Next" button. The "Edit a URL" dialog window appears.

    • 4

Enter the URL to the website download. You can also enter a URL that opens the user's browser to the download web page. Click the "Ok" button.

    • 5

Use your mouse to click the new link. Your browser opens and begins the download for the file. If you chose to link it to a web page, the browser displays a website instead.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must have the full version of Adobe Acrobat to edit files and not just the free reader software.
