How to Turn Off Internal Microphones on a Dell Inspiron

Dell Inspirons consist of a series of colorful laptops that support Windows operating systems. Many of them come with a built-in microphone that enables you to record speech and music, and communicate with friends using messenger programs. While you cannot remove the microphone from your computer, you can temporarily turn off the microphone using your systems audio settings.

  1. Windows Vista Users

      Click the Windows "Start" menu then click "Control Panel."

      Click the "Sound" icon then click the "Playback" tab.

      Right-click "Speakers" and click "Properties." Click the "Levels" tab. Click the "Speaker" icon next to "Microphone" and click "Apply" to save the changes. Click "OK."

    Windows XP Users

      Click the Windows "Start" menu and click the "Control Panel."

      Double-click the "Sound and Audio Devices" icon to launch the audio properties. Click the "Audio" tab and click "Advanced" under "Sound Recording."

      Click the "Mute" check-box under "Microphone." Click "OK" to save the changes. You are no longer able to use your built-in microphone.
