Don't confuse Network marketing with Multi-level marketing. If any company puts more emphasis on recruiting than it does an actual product or products, it is a Multi-level marketing campaign and per the FCC, "it is to be viewed skeptically."
The keys to recognizing a legitimate NMC are longevity, products, management, and compensation.

The recruiters or sales people must work for the NMC full time. If you are being recruited and the sales person has a 40-hour per week job with another company, then he's actually trying to recruit you into a multi-level-marketing scheme.

The quality of the products also play a role in your decision in selecting a NMC. Cheap, whimsical items such as magazine subscriptions and items that only seem to be promoting the company, are a sign that you are not dealing with a solid corporation.
If the products are valuable to you they will be valuable to your potential customers. If you can honestly look at the product and see that it would be difficult for you to sale, or is not an item that sales in general, it's best you not get involved. It doesn't matter how much money the pitchman says he's made, you know a quality product when you see one. Ask yourself the question and answer it honestly, "would I buy this?" If you even hesitate with your response, steer clear of the situation.

Speak with some of the clients of the Network Marketing Company that you are considering doing business with. It's important that you seek out these individuals rather than the other way around. Do not go by the testimonials on the website. When have you ever known a company to place a negative testimony on their site? You have to go to the source. Seek out the customers who have a relationship with the NMC and ask for their opinion.

Choose a company that has been in business for 10 years or longer. Research the companies earnings. Also check the Better Business Bureau for potential complaints about the organization. You can also search the state's database of registered businesses to make sure the company is legit. Check the resource link, "Secretary of State Corporation and Business Entity," to search the database by state.
