An auto reply to new followers promotes camaraderie on Twitter.

Twitter's easy-to-use microblogging platform and its simple design contribute to the site's success -- in fact, Twitter stats boast more than 340 million tweets per day. However, in spite of Twitter's ease of use, autoresponding to new Twitter followers via a direct message can't be done within Twitter itself -- at least as of August 2012 -- but must be done with an outside program. Four programs stand out as the most popular for sending autoresponder messages; these include SocialOomph, Tweet Adder, Tweeting Machine and TwitterDMer. As of time of publication, only TwitterDMer offers the autoresponder feature for free.

Instructions

  1. Set Up Autoresponder With Paid Services or Programs

    • 1

Download TweetAdder (see link in Resources). The program is available for free during a trial period, but you must pay to continue service. Purchase full access for anywhere from $55 to $188, as of 2012, depending on how many Twitter accounts you will manage. Once downloaded, click "Manage Users" to add your Twitter account to the program. Click "Open User" to select your account. Click "Thank You Messages" to customize an automated response.

Sign up with TweetingMachine (see link in Resources). As of 2012, you can try the service for free for 24 hours, but after that you must pay about $20 per month to continue service. Authorize TweetingMachine to link to your Twitter account by clicking "Sign in With Twitter." Access the "Automatically Follow Followers" feature and, instead setting up automated following, follow specific instructions for setting up the autoresponder.

Sign up with SocialOomph (see link in Resources). The autoresponder with this service was once free, but now costs, as of 2012, about $8 per month. Click "Main Landing Page." Under "Social Accounts," click "Add a New Twitter Account." Then click "Authorize Access" to link to your Twitter account. On the main landing page, click "Direct Messages" then "Schedule a New DM" in the drop-down menu. Click on the "Auto-Follow and Auto-DM" tab and follow instructions for upgrading to the autoresponder service.
