How to Write a Course Syllabus

Save

A class syllabus, or curriculum outline, lets students know upfront what you expect of them and how to succeed in the course. A strong syllabus gives students the impression that they have an organized and well planned instructor; here's how to create one.

  • Provide all contact information at the beginning of the syllabus. Include the most convenient methods of contact, as well as office hours and location.

  • Use the syllabus to write a brief course description.

  • List required classroom materials, tools, and supplies.

  • Outline expectations for students. The class syllabus should cover policies on attendance, expected behavior, classroom rules, and other policies regarding student conduct.

  • Explain the method of grading and what quality level of work is required for each letter grade (for example; 90% and higher might be an "A" grade).

  • Describe the organization of the course using the syllabus format. Detail whether the course grades are based on hands on projects, exams, lecture, or a combination.

  • Include any extra class information at the end of the course syllabus.
