How to Repair a Corrupted MS Word File

Files that you save on your system, such as a Microsoft Word document, can sometime encounter a problem that causes the file to become corrupted. When this happens you can use the repair option that is available with newer versions of Microsoft Word to repair the file. If you are using an older version of Microsoft Word you can use a software program, such as Repair My Word, to repair the corrupted file.

Instructions

  1. Using Microsoft Word

      Open Microsoft Word on your system by double-clicking the Word icon on your desktop or by going to the Start menu and selecting Programs.

      Click "File" and then select "Open" on the drop-down menu.

      Locate the corrupted document on your system and single-click the file to select it.

      Click the small arrow to the right of the "Open" button.

      Select the "Open and Repair" option from the list.

      Wait while the program attempts to repair the file.

    Use a Word Repair Program

      Download the Repair My Word utility to your system. Save the file to a location such as your desktop.

      Double-click the file to open the program.

      Click the "Repair/Open" option and then locate the corrupt Word document on your system.

      Click "Open" and the contents of the file will appear in the window.

      Copy the text and paste it into a new Word document.
