How to Troubleshoot Audio Codec

When you open a video file on your system and do not hear any audio you may not have the audio codec installed that is needed. In order to troubleshoot an audio codedcyou will need to view the codec that was used for the movie file and then install the correct codec on your system. You can do this by using the Gspot Codec Information Appliance and then installing the K-Lite Codec Pack.

Instructions

  1. View Codec Information

    • 1

      Download and install the Gspot Codec Information Appliance (see Resources). Save the file to your desktop and double click on the file to display its contents.

      Copy the Gspot.exe and Gspot27.dat files and paste them to a location such as your desktop.

      Double click the Gspot.exe file to open the program.

    • 4

      Click the File drop down and locate a movie file or audio file and click the "Open" button.

      View the audio codec information under the Audio section and the video codec under the Video section.

    Install Missing Codecs

      Download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack (see Resources). Save the file to a location on your system such as the desktop.

      Double click the file to install it on your system. Click "Next" to go through each screen of the Setup Wizard and click the "Finish" button to complete the installation.

      Open an audio or video file to see if the audio is being heard and you can see the video.

Tips & Warnings

  • Installing the K-lite Codec Pack will provide you with the codecs needed to play nearly all movie files.

  • If you cannot open the downloaded Gspot Codec Information Appliance you may need an extraction program such as WinRAR.
