How to Remove Gentian Violet Stains

Gentian violet is a powerful staining agent. Stains can be removed, but it's important to act quickly. The longer that nasty stuff sets, the harder it will be to remove. Pre-test stain removal products in an inconspicuous area of the affected item or garment. Apply a few drops and rub the test area gently with a white washcloth. If a color change occurs or if you see any of the item's color on the washcloth, it's not a candidate for home stain removal. Please consult a professional. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Non-Washable Fabrics

    • 1

Sponge the gentian violet stain with water.

    • 2

Combine 1 cup of warm water with 1 teaspoon of mild hand dishwashing detergent. Add a few drops of white vinegar and mix well. Dab the detergent and vinegar solution on the stain with a clean sponge and let it set for at least 30 minutes. Moisten a washcloth with the solution and blot the stain every 5 minutes. Flush the treated stain thoroughly with water.

    • 3

Dampen a washcloth with rubbing alcohol and dab the violet stain gently with it. Fold a separate white washcloth into quarters and press it strongly against the stain. Do not rub or scrub. Fold the now-stained spot out of the way and press a clean area to the stain. Repeat until you're not picking up any more of the violet color with your cloth. Flood the stain with rubbing alcohol and allow it to dry. Sponge with water.

    • 4

Combine 1 cup of warm water with 1 teaspoon of mild hand dishwashing detergent. Add a few drops of clear household ammonia. Dab the ammonia solution onto the stain with a washcloth. Let it set for at least 30 minutes. Moisten another white cloth with the solution and blot the stain every 5 minutes. Flush with water and allow to dry thoroughly.

    • 5

Combine 1 teaspoon of water with 1 teaspoon of household bleach. Apply the solution with an eyedropper to any final traces of the stain. Don't let the bleach stay in contact with the fabric for more than 2 minutes. Flush well with water. Don't use bleach solution on silk, wool or spandex.

    • 6

Dab white vinegar on the area to remove excess bleach. Flush with plenty of water. Allow to air dry.

    Washable Fabrics

    • 7

Mix ½ teaspoon of an enzyme or protein presoak product with ½ cup warm water.

    • 8

Apply to the stain and allow to set according to the packaging instructions.

    • 12

Apply to the stained area. Wait a minute or two to allow the alcohol to work.

    • 13

Rinse well with plenty of water. Wash the area with mild soap and water and rinse well.
