How to Remove Stippled Paint

Once a widely-popular style of texture, stippled paint has now become outdated in the minds of many. Unfortunately, many homeowners still have stippled paint in their homes thanks to previous owners. If you'd like to do away with stippled paint in your home, there are generally two approaches you can take. Either texture and paint over the stippled paint or remove it completely and start fresh. If you need to remove stippled paint from a wall or ceiling in your home, use the proper techniques, or you may end up damaging the sheetrock that lies underneath. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic drops cloths
  • Ammonia
  • Plastic spray bottle
  • Broad putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the furniture and electronics from the room.

      Cover the flooring with plastic drop cloths.

      Fill a plastic spray bottle with one part ammonia and one part water.

    • 4

      Spray the stippled paint with the plastic spray bottle. Saturate an area of about 4-by-4 feet.

      Repeat Step 4 at least three to five times. Allow the area to sit for 15 minutes.

      Scrape the stippled paint from the sheetrock using the broad putty knife.

      Repeat Steps 3 through 6 until you have removed all of the stippled paint in the room.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your time and use care when attempting to remove wet stipple paint from sheetrock or you may end up gouging chunks from the sheetrock by accident.
