How to Color Sugar Cubes

It takes little effort to open a box of sugar cubes and fill a sugar dish or begin crafting with them. But with a little effort, you can color sugar cubes and create colorful castles, igloos and flags. Colored sugar cubes also add an extra special touch to tea time.

You don't have to make your own sugar cubes to enjoy colored sugar. You can buy white sugar cubes from the store and add color with food color or paint, which can leave the sugar edible or render it inedible, depending on your method. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Tray
  • Sugar cubes
  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Spray bottle
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towel
  • Food color
  • Frosting
  • Butter knife
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brush

Instructions

  1. Dabbing

    • 1

      Set an empty tray next to a bowl filled with sugar cubes.

    • 2

      Squeeze several drops of food color onto a paper towel; dab the color onto a sugar cube.

      Set the sugar cube aside to dry and repeat process on the remaining sugar cubes.

    Dipping

    • 4

      Mix 1/2 cup of water with several drops of food color in a bowl.

      Place the sugar cube on a slotted spoon and dip it into the colored water.

      Set the sugar cube onto a tray to dry. Repeat the process.

    Misting

    • 7

      Mix 1/2 cup water and food color in a fine misting bottle.

      Spray the sugar cubes with the mist.

      Set aside to dry.

    Frosting

      Mix food color with white frosting.

    • 11

      Using a butter knife, apply thin layers of frosting onto the sugar cubes.

      Set aside to dry.

    Painting

      Dip a paint brush into the acrylic paint.

      Brush the paint onto the sugar cubes.

      Set aside to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sugar cubes covered with acrylic paint are for decorative purposes only. They are not edible once the paint is added.
