How to Configure Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer is an application that is installed on Windows operating systems. The file manager application allows you to have easy access to all of the files, folders and drives on your computer. To better organize those files, folders, and drives you can configure Windows Explorer to customize the appearance of your data.

  • Click your Windows "Start" button. Type "Windows Explorer" in the search box. Click on "Windows Explorer" to open the program.

  • Click the "Organize" button on the Windows Explorer toolbar. Click the "New Folder" option if you would like to create a new folder to better organize the displayed files. You will be able to give your folder a unique name to help you identify it from the other folders. You can then use your mouse to drag and drop files into the folder.

  • Click the "Organize" button again. Select "Layout" to change the information that is displayed in your Windows Explorer window. For example, if you select the "Details Pane" layout, all of the details about a highlighted file, such as the file size, file type, and the date the file was created, will be displayed at the bottom of your window. If you select the "Preview Pane," a snapshot of the file will appear when the file is highlighted.

  • Click the "Views" button on the Windows Explorer toolbar. Select the way you would like to see your files displayed. For example, you can display the files as a list of names or icons. You can make the icons, small, medium, large or extra large.

  • Share your Windows Explorer files by clicking on the "Share" button that is located on the toolbar. You will be able to "Add" the name of the person you want to have access to your files.
