Instructions

    • 1

Use a flea collar. Flea collars are one of the safest ways to keep fleas off your cat. The collar has pesticide-like ingredients that are harmful to the fleas, but are harmless to the cat. Place the collar on the cat and it will be protected from fleas for several months, depending on the brand.

    • 2

Try over-the-counter spot medications to kill and prevent fleas. These are topical treatments that are given to your cat once a month to get rid of and keep fleas off the cat. The dosage varies depending on the age and weight of the cat, so read the box carefully to ensure you are buying the right product for your cat.

    • 3

Wash your cat with a flea shampoo. Flea shampoos are created to kill fleas on the cat, as well as clean them. Shampoos will kill adult fleas, not eggs. Shampoo your cat like you would with a normal shampoo, avoiding the ears and eyes.

    • 4

Brush your cat with a flea comb. A flea comb is one of the old, basic ways of getting fleas off of cats. This will remove adult fleas deep in the coat of the cat.

    • 5

Vacuum your carpet using a carpet powder created to kill fleas. These carpet powders contain insecticides and other ingredients that will kill and control flea growth in your home. Most of the powders control the growth of the fleas for up to one year.

    • 6

Spray upholstery and cat bedding with a flea area spray. It uses pesticide-like chemicals to kill fleas and flea eggs. You can allow the area to air dry or dry it with a towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your cat seems irritated by any over-the-counter flea treatment with insecticides, stop treatment and take the cat to a veterinarian for treatment instead.

  • Some flea shampoos are not recommended for use on Persian cats.

  • Ensure the cat has no mats or tangles in its fur before using the flea comb.

  • Treat all animals in your home for fleas, not just the cat you know is infected.

  • Do not use flea control products designed specifically for dogs on your cat.
