How to Go to a Restore Point in Vista

System Restore is a program that restores your user files to an earlier date when your computer was operating more efficiently. These optional dates that you can restore your system to are called "restore points." When you perform a System Restore, your computer will automatically recommend a restore point, but you can choose your own restore point if you know how to navigate your way through the restore program. Going to your restore points in Windows Vista is easily done by following a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Close all open windows and programs.

    • 2

Select "Start," and then select "All Programs."

    • 3

Click on "Accessories," and then choose "System Tools."

    • 4

Select "System Restore" from the System Tools menu. Verify that you want to continue when prompted. When the System Restore window opens, it will list two options. The first listed is "Recommended," and it recommends a restore point for you. The circle next to this option is automatically checked. You will want to check the circle next to the second option, which allows you to choose a different restore point.

    • 5

Click the circle next to "Choose a Different Restore Point." The window will now list restore point dates from the last five days. However, to choose an earlier restore point, check the box on the bottom left of the window that says "Choose Restore Point Older Than 5 Days." This will allow you to view, and select from, all of your available restore points.

Select your restore point, and proceed with the "System Restore" if you wish. Otherwise, select "Cancel."

Tips & Warnings

  • To create your own restore point, instead of selecting "Choose a Different Restore Point," choose the highlighted option below it to "Open System Protection."

  • When you do a System Restore, you will lose any programs and settings that were installed on your computer since the restore point date that you select.
