How to Fix a 30G iPod Phone Jack

The 30 gigabyte (GB) iPod is a miniaturized computer designed to play music using headphones. The constant insertion and pulling out of the headphone plug introduces dirt and debris into the headphone jack and can cause the headphone jack to operate as if the headphones are always plugged in. The headphone plug will not recognize a headphone plug when it is actually plugged in and so makes listening to music impossible. The iPod doesn't have to be taken into a service center because you can fix the headphone jack yourself in just a couple of minutes and with common household items.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear work gloves to protect your hands from being accidentally cut when using the utility knife.

  • Don't use cheap cotton swabs because they are too fluffy, and the cotton can tear off inside of the headphone jack.
