How to Build Headers With Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is a useful program if you need to make a header for your website or blog. You can size the header perfectly for your website, modify the colors, and save it so that it is optimized for web viewing. You need to find out the dimensions of your blog or web page before you start designing the header.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a new, blank document in Adobe Photoshop that is the width (in pixels) of the web page where you will place the header. It can be any height that you wish. For instance, a common default blog header size is about 760 pixels wide by 150 pixels high (you can find or change this information in your blog settings). The width of the common web viewer's screen (1024 pixels on most computers) is your limit.

    • 2

Set the resolution of your new file at 300 pixels per inch and make sure that the color mode is set to RGB. All of these options will show on the "New" dialog box that appears when you create a new file.

    • 3

Double-click the "Foreground" color box on your "Tools" window and change that to the color you want. Also set the "Background" color box to the color you want to use for your header. The foreground and background color boxes are set to black and white, respectively, by default.

    • 4

Click "Edit" then "Fill" and select "Use Background Color." This will fill the header background with the color you chose in the last step.

    • 5

Type in the site name, slogan, or website address that you want to display in your header. This step is optional.

    • 6

Open a royalty-free photo or design in Photoshop and copy and paste it to the foreground of your header. Adjust the size (using "Edit" then "Transform") and position it to the right, left, or center of the header. Change the opacity (transparency level, set by default to 100 percent), if you wish, in the "Layers" window.

    • 7

Use the "Eraser Tool" in the "Tools" window to erase the edges of the photo if you wish. Be sure to play with the brush size and type in the "Options" window.

    • 8

Save the header file in Photoshop PSD format when you're finished editing it. Then click "Save for Web" to save a copy for your website. The "Save for Web" tool will compress it to a web size and allow you to save the image as a JPEG, GIF, or PNG file (standards for the web).
