1
Decide whether you want to draw your snake coiled or stretched out. Use a photograph for your guide. A beginner may want to start with a stretched-out rattlesnake. Sketch the basic composition of your drawing first. Keep it simple. You might want to sketch in a rock to drape your rattlesnake over. Consider a desert setting, which is a natural home for a rattlesnake and also a perfect background for a beginner to draw because a rock and a few simple plants will be enough. Keep your sketching light until you have the elements drawn to your satisfaction.

2
Draw a long "S" shape on your paper, draping the middle of it over the rock. Draw another curved line in the same shape, running parallel to the first one, then taper both lines until they meet in a point. This will be the tail of your rattlesnake.

3
Draw short horizontal lines across the tapered end of your snake. Give each line a slight outward curve, then connect the lines on each side with a vertical line. This is the rattle. You may want to erase and redraw until the edges of the rattle have a rounded appearance. Once you've finished the rattle, give it a light shading with your pencil to fill it in.
-
4
Draw the head of your rattlesnake as an arrowhead shape with the pointed end as the mouth. Use your eraser to round the pointed corners of the arrowhead to give it a more realistic shape.
-
5
Sketch diamond shapes along the body of your rattlesnake. Shade the diamonds with dark pencil and the spaces in between the diamonds with light pencil to give the snake appropriate coloring.
-
6
Darken and shade the rest of your drawing's compositional elements to match your snake. Keep the shading light so your rattlesnake stands out against the background.
