How to Program a Keyless Remote on a Mini Cooper

Remote keyless entry is standard on most vehicles today. There was a time in the recent past when the key had to be used to unlock a locked door. But in today's car world, companies can unlock your doors remotely if you are locked out. The trunk can be opened from 15 feet away to make getting the groceries in and out much faster. To insure security, the keyless remote involves several steps for programming. The MINI Cooper has two models of keys: the two-button and three-button.

Two-button Keys

  • Sit in the driver's seat of the vehicle. Make sure all the doors are closed and both keys are with you.

  • Press and hold the "Unlock" button on the first key while pressing the center "Lock" button three times.

  • Release the "Unlock" button at the same time as the "Lock" button on the third time.

  • Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the second key within 30 seconds.

  • Exit the vehicle and test the remotes.

Three-button Keys

  • Sit in the driver's seat of the vehicle with all the keys.

  • Insert one key into the ignition switch and turn to the "2D" position. The dash lights should come on. Remove the key. Do not turn the ignition off.

  • Press and hold the "Unlock" button on the remote. Press the center "Lock" button three times while holding the "Unlock" button on the remote. Release the "Unlock" button at the same time as the "Lock" button after the third press.

  • Repeat Step 3 for the second key within 30 seconds of completing the first key's programming.

  • Turn the ignition off. Exit the vehicle and test the remotes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure all of the keys for the vehicle are programmed at the same time.
  • Programming one key and not both will disable the second key permanently.
