How to Program a Keyless Honda Element

The addition of keyless entry to any vehicle can make life faster. There is no longer the need to put the key in the car door to unlock it. The trunk can be opened from 15 feet away while you hold a load of groceries. People are more likely to lock their doors after exiting the vehicle. The major problem comes when trying to program the remotes. Many vehicles require that all the remotes be programmed at once. Additionally, many manufacturers, like Honda, have very complex procedures to program the remotes. This is the case when programming the remote for a Honda Element.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in the driver's seat and close the door. Make sure that all the doors are shut.

    • 2

Turn the ignition key to the position labeled "II" on the ignition-lock bezel.

    • 3

Press the lock button on one remote for one second and release.

    • 4

Turn the ignition off. Steps 2, 3 and 4 must be completed within 5 seconds of each other.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4 three more times, for a total of four times. The door locks will make a "clunk" sound like they just locked. Do not attempt to unlock or open the doors. The car is now in programming mode.

    • 6

Press the lock button on each remote to be programmed, one at a time. The door locks will cycle after each button is pressed and released. All the remotes need to be programmed within 10 seconds total.

    • 7

Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position, remove the key and exit the vehicle.

    • 8

Test each remote. If they do not work, then repeat all the steps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Every time one remote is programmed, all remotes must be programmed.

  • Do not open the doors once the vehicle is in programming mode.
