How to Make a Cardboard Nintendo DS

The Nintendo DS is so popular that everybody wants to be able to pull the game console out of his pocket. But since not everybody wants to buy one, it's just as good to make a Nintendo DS out of cardboard construction paper instead. The basic origami technique will have you "playing" on a Nintendo DS that you've made yourself. Your Nintendo DS may not be able to play games--but it won't run out of battery power either.

Things You'll Need

  • 8-by-10-inch sheet of cardboard construction paper
  • Ruler
  • Black permanent ink pen
  • Crayons

Instructions

    • 1

Put the sheet of cardboard construction paper down on a table with the 8-inch side at top. Use the black permanent ink pen to draw three small circles side by side at one end of the paper about 1 inch in from the end. Draw another set of three circles beneath the three at each end.

    • 2

Use the black permanent ink pen to draw a rectangle in the middle of the paper that is 6 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide. Use the crayons to draw a picture in the middle of the rectangle to represent a video game character.

    • 3

Draw another rectangle similar to the first about 3 inches down from the first. Draw a cross at the left side of the rectangle about 1 inch in from the end of the paper on the left. Draw two circles side by side on the right side of the paper even with the cross on the left side and with the outermost circle 1 inch in from the end. Draw a circle above the two circles and draw a circle below the two circles. Use the crayons to draw a picture in the middle of the rectangle to represent a video game character.

    • 4

Use the scissors and ruler to cut out each rectangle, including the circles and cross drawings that are at the side of the rectangle. Tape the bottom edge of the top rectangle to the top edge of the bottom rectangle with cellophane tape.

    • 5

Fold the top rectangle over on top of the bottom rectangle. Draw a small rectangle at the top of the top rectangle with the black permanent ink pen. Draw caps at both ends of the rectangle using the black permanent ink pen to represent hinges. Draw a small rectangle at the bottom of the top rectangle and write "Nintendo" inside of the rectangle with the black permanent ink pen.

    • 6

Turn the "Nintendo DS" over and draw a small rectangle near the bottom edge. Draw the vertical lines of a bar code within the rectangle using the black permanent ink pen. Write "NU10000000X" below the vertical lines.

    • 7

Turn the "Nintendo DS" back right side up. Open the top rectangle from the bottom rectangle to see the game "screens" inside.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a paper cutter rather than scissors if you want the cardboard construction paper cut with the straightest lines.

  • Don't get your Nintendo DS wet because the water can make it soggy.
