How to Stop a Check Disk Reboot

Your computer might shut down improperly for several reasons. Perhaps a power outage or a corrupted file forced your computer to shut down. When you turn your computer back on after it's been shut down, it may attempt to run the check disk before you can access your computer. If you don't want to run the check disk, it is imperative that you stop it before it starts, as it could take hours to run through all of your files, and stopping in the middle could potentially damage your files.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your computer back on after the irregular shut down.

    • 2

Watch for the blue check disk screen to appear as your computer reboots. It will tell you that one of your disks may need to be checked for consistency because Windows shut down irregularly.

    • 3

Read over the menu that appears on the screen after reboot quickly and carefully. You will usually have 12 seconds to choose an option before the check disk starts automatically. Scroll through the options presented on the screen. If you wish to continue with the scan disk, you can either highlight the option to scan your hard drive with the cursor and press "Enter," or do nothing. Check disk will automatically begin after the 12-second countdown if you do not make a choice.

    • 4

Press any key on your keyboard during the 12-second window to bypass the check disk scan. As long as you have not highlighted the option to proceed with the check disk, pressing any key will take you to the start-up menu unless there is a disk error.

Tips & Warnings

  • In the event that you cannot reach your startup menu after bypassing the check disk page, restart your computer and allow the check disk function to run. It may be able to find the error that is preventing your computer from starting and functioning properly.
