1
Measure the window that you want to design the black curtains for. Use a tape measure to find the length and the width of the window. Add 6 or more inches to the length to ensure that the bottom edge of the curtain will fall below the edge of the window, or deduct 6 or more inches for curtains that will cover only the top half of the window. Double the measurement for the width of the window to create curtains that will ripple and pleat. Plan to make two curtains that are this measurement, per window.

2
Lay your black fabric face down on your work surface so that the length is vertical and the width is horizontal. Use a tape measure, straightedge and fabric marking pen to create cut lines on the back side of the fabric.

3
Use sharp scissors to cut the fabric to size. Avoid using dull scissors, especially when working with thick fabrics, because the dull scissors will not cut through the fabric easily and will leave frayed edges.
-
4
Lay the fabric face-down on your work surface. Fold all edges of the fabric over ½ inch. Use straight pins, also known as common pins, to secure each edge.
-
5
Use a sewing machine and a shade of black thread that matches the fabric to stitch all pinned seams. Stitch twice for added strength and durability. Remove all pins when you are finished sewing.
-
6
Lay the curtains face-down on your work surface one more time. Fold the top edges of each panel down 3 inches. Insert pins along the bottom of the fold every 2 inches. Do this to create rod pockets that will allow your curtains to be hung using a standard curtain rod.
-
7
Stitch the seam using the sewing machine and matching colored thread. Remove all pins when you are finished sewing. Insert the curtain rod, and hang your custom-designed black curtains.
