How to Convert Wire Gauge to Inch

A wire gauge, also known as "standardized wire gauge" or "American wire gauge," is a system of measurement used to determine the diameter of wire that conducts electricity. There are 40 gauge sizes, numbered in increasing size from 1 through 36, with four even smaller gauges numbered 0000, 000, 00, and 0.

The formula

  • Subtract the number of the gauge (0000 - 40) from 36. (In our example we'll use gauge number 4, meaning we're left with 32.)

  • Take that number and divide it by 39. (32 divided by 39 equals 0.8205.)

  • Take 92 and multiply it by the power of the number found in Step 2. (92 to the power of 0.8205 equals 40.85901.)

  • Multiply that number by 0.005 inches. (40.85901 times 0.005 inches equals 0.20429 inches.)

  • That number in inches is the diameter of your gauge.
