How to Repair the Insulation on Curtains
Curtains are not just an element of home decor. They also provide privacy and additional protection against heat and cold. In fact, many curtains are made specifically to protect against extreme temperatures and are lined with an insulating material. Since the insulation is constantly exposed to temperature changes and sunlight, it is not unusual for the insulation material to become damaged. It is relatively easy to repair damaged insulation without needing to buy new curtains. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions for patching the insulation
-
1
Lay the curtain panel face down on a flat work surface. If the damage is a hole or a tear in the insulation, patching the insulation will work best. To patch the insulation, cut a piece of new insulation at least 1/2 inch larger than the damaged area of the old insulation.
-
2
Using straight pins, pin the new piece of insulation over the damaged area of the old insulation.

3
Since the insulated liner is still attached to the curtain, the patch will need to be hand sewn onto the damaged insulation. Carefully sew along the perimeter of the patch so that the patch securely covers the damaged insulation. Once the patch is secure, remove the straight pins and re-hang your curtain.

In some cases, the insulation will be too damaged to patch. In this instance, the entire insulated lining will need to be replaced. Lay the curtain panel face down on a flat surface. Using a seam ripper, carefully remove the seams on all four sides of the curtain and remove the old damaged insulation. Measure the length and width of the curtain.

5
Lay the insulation lining fabric on a flat surface. Measure out a piece of fabric the same size as the measurements taken from the curtain. Cut out the insulation and lay the liner on top of the face-down curtain panel.
-
6
Carefully fold both the curtain and the insulation over the back of the curtain to recreate the original seam. Use straight pins to hold the fabric in place. Repeat this on both sides and the bottom of the curtain. At the top of the curtain, pin the lining fabric along the seam just below the rod pocket or tabs.

Using a sewing machine, sew along both sides and the bottom of the curtain to close the seams. At the top seam, carefully sew along the original seam to attach the insulation to the curtain. Remove all straight pins and repeat steps 1 through 4 for each curtain panel.
